Mr. Ibrahim Jabr Speaks with Muriel Glasgow about The Preventable Blindness Disease: Trachoma

Jabr, Interim President of the International Trachoma Initiative (trachoma.org). For nearly three years, Mr. Jabr has played a key role in the International Trachoma Initiative’s pioneering work to build partnerships with governments and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) toward the goal of eliminating blinding trachoma by 2020. Mr. Jabr brings extensive experience in child health development and in programmatic strategies for mass action and social mobilization, gained during 29 years working with UNICEF, to his leadership at the International Trachoma Initiative.
The International Trachoma Initiative (ITI) is dedicated to the elimination of blinding trachoma, the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness, a public health problem in 55 countries in the Americas, Africa and Asia. 84 million people suffer from trachoma. ITI provides targeted support to health ministries and their partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors in 17 countries for the implementation of the SAFE strategy [http://www.trachoma.org/safe.php] for trachoma control (surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness, and environmental improvements) in countries where trachoma remains a significant cause of blindness. In addition to treating and preventing blinding trachoma, the SAFE strategy addresses broader poverty issues and contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
